Non-Friday Fiction Not Exactly 100-Word Challenge: “Hey Lads, the Demon Fen!”

A shanty from the Bloody Hauberk.

Come up, all, watch and be wary.
Hey lads, the Demon Fen!
Or your empty husk we’ll bury.
Hey lads, we’ll go again!

Tentacles and horny beak
They catch the sleeping and the weak.
And drag their souls to Horror’s Deep.
Hey lads, the Demon Fen!

* * *
Long years, no ship could sail the Fen
Hey lads, the Demon Fen!
‘Til wise one caught the light and then
Hey lads, we’ll go again!

They hung it from The Sent’nel’s cage
Where it shines against demons’ rage
And so it stands from age to age.
Hey lads, the Demon Fen!

* * *
So hold your blades and longpoles handy.
Hey lads, the Demon Fen!
Here’s no place for boy or dandy.
Hey lads, we’ll go again!

The Sentinel will light our way.
The watcher’s light shines night and day,
But if it don’t, we’ll sail anyway!
Hey lads, the Demon Fen!

* * *
Our Captain, we say he’s the top.
Hey lads, the Demon Fen!
Gold-ring tusks like a palace fop.
Hey lads, we’ll go again!

Captain Breakback is his name
Man and demon know his fame.
They sing for blood? They sing in vain!
Hey lads, the Demon Fen!

I dropped the ball a couple of weeks ago and didn’t post a story for the PS Friday Fiction challenge, and it rankled. I had a story in mind, but couldn’t pull it together in a form I felt was worth sharing. Ultimately, the only thing I could capture and put on paper was the shanty the crew sang as they sailed toward the Demon Fen. I can’t say for sure if we’ll hear more from the crew of the Bloody Hauberk and its daring captain, the half-orc they call Breakback. I’ve heard rumors from upriver that The Sentinel’s light has gone out and if that’s the case, the Hauberk’s crew may not have survived the run. But perhaps they did. I’d never rule out Breakback.
